Today’s point of interest arises from a colleague at work asking me for some abdominal exercises to reduce the paunch he has gained over the last few years. For those that know, this isn’t possible. The paunch is a layer of fat that can only be reduced effectively by careful management of calorie intake and calorie expenditure (exercise). Ah, I hear you say, abs exercise does burn calories, yes quite true but only a small amount compared to whole body exercises such as running, swimming or cycling etc. The abs exercises will of course tone this area of the body but if you want all your hard work (your 6 pack) to show you need to reduce your body’s fat percentage. So to get a 6 pack you do need to do abs exercises but to show it off requires a weight loss strategy to accompany the abs work.
